Buckingham Arms Fire

On Saturday 16 November 2024 a fire broke out in the Buckingham Arms hotel complex. The site had been vacant for some two years and had been heavily vandalised.
The development applications to redevelop the site all retain the local heritage listed components of the building.
There have been a couple of radio reports and interviews with the Mayor of the Town of Walkerville since the fire - click on the following links to hear these:

The developer, Citify, has also made a statement via InDaily vowing to restore the heritage components.

Purpose of WRA

- To promote, advance, retain and improve, and to resist any diminution of the 'village' character of Walkerville.
- To oppose development that is inconsistent with that objective.
- To preserve and enhance historically and environmentally significant buildings, reserves, sites, spaces, flora and fauna.
- To promote, encourage and reinforce observation by the Corporation of the Town of Walkerville of its statutory, regulatory, or other obligations to its residents and electors; in particular those of open, consultative and responsive government and development in accordance with their needs, aspirations and desires.
- To do all things lawful that are necessary or ancillary to these objectives.

History of WRA

- The inaugural meeting of Walkerville Resident’s Association Incorporated was held on 14th June 2002.
- Several heritage and planning issues were a key focus of involvement for the organisation in the first decade of its’ establishment, including the pioneer cottages of 84-86 Walkerville Terrace.
- The WRA was also involved with the Walkerville Town Centre Revitalization Project and made many submissions regarding the redevelopment of the Highways Department/ Transport SA site.
- After some quiescent years it was revitalised in 2023.
